It seems like every other day, there’s a news report on hackers breaching corporate networks, stealing user data and financial information. The reports always talk about what the hackers did and sometimes how they did it, but they almost never explain why.
Despite how they’re portrayed in the media, many hackers are honest, hardworking people looking to help vendors improve the security of their products. They’re studious, like to break the rules (but usually not the law) and have many different motivations, from prestige to destruction to the almighty dollar. If you treat them with professional understanding and respect, they’ll often treat you the same way. If you treat them as villains that are not to be trusted… they’ll often treat you the same way.
Understanding how hackers think helps us protect ourselves against malicious attacks. Whether you’re securing a multi-billion dollar business or safeguarding your personal information, the more you can think like a hacker, the better you can protect yourself from getting hacked.
