Update: We’ve just released a new webcast discussing ActiveSync on BlackBerry 10. Find out how ActiveSync works with BlackBerry 10 to enable basic security and device management features. See what’s involved in ActiveSync setup, both for IT and end users. Watch it here.

BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 is the ideal method of deploying, managing and securing BlackBerry 10 smartphones. It delivers rich enterprise mobility management features, BlackBerry Balance, BlackBerry World for Work, and other capabilities that businesses need to realize their full mobility potential. But, we recognize that some customers or groups of users may have their mobility management and connectivity needs met by using a basic ActiveSync connection on a supported mail server without the use of BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. We are pleased to be able to support this connectivity model with BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

We’ve talked quite a bit about ActiveSync in the past here on the Inside BlackBerry for Business Blog, so make sure that you’ve also taken a look at our past blog posts:

How to Connect Your BlackBerry PlayBook to Enterprise Email with ActiveSync

Hey BlackBerry, what about BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express?

Does BlackBerry Compromise on Security by Using ActiveSync? The answer is No, and here’s why…

Using ActiveSync to Connect and Manage BlackBerry 10 Smartphones

It’s quite likely that you’re using a Microsoft Exchange server, an IBM Lotus Domino server, or a Novell GroupWise mail server. BlackBerry 10 smartphones (and BlackBerry PlayBook tablets) can connect to any of these mail servers as long as ActiveSync is enabled. If you’re using Microsoft Office 365, we’ve got a great Knowledge Base article (KB33522) that walks you through the process. You’ll need to make sure that your mail server is enabled for ActiveSync, grab your BlackBerry 10 smartphone, and add a new account.

To review what versions of ActiveSync are support on BlackBerry 10 smartphones and the specific policies supported, see our BlackBerry Knowledge Base article. You can also learn more about BlackBerry 10 and ActiveSync support for IBM Domino and Traveler environments. Lastly, we’ve got all of the details on BlackBerry 10 ActiveSync support for Novell GroupWise environments.

Adding an ActiveSync Enabled Account on Your BlackBerry 10 Smartphone

Adding an ActiveSync enabled email account to your BlackBerry 10 smartphone is simple and straightforward.

While viewing the home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen

Select Settings > Accounts

If this is your first account, select the Advanced icon that appears along the bottom toolbar.

If you have other accounts already, select Add Account followed by selecting Advanced

Select Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync from the Advanced Setup options (for all ActiveSync based accounts regardless of mail platform)

Enter in the required information, which includes:

Username

Email Address

Password

Server Address

Port (443 by default)

Note: optional fields include Description, Domain, toggles for SSL, VPN, and Push, as well as the Sync Timeframe.

Tap Next to finish configuring the account, and then tap Done.

That’s it! You should now have a BlackBerry 10 smartphone configured with work email via Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. To remove an account, check out the instructions at the bottom of our Inside BlackBerry Help Blog post on email, contacts, calendar, and social networking accounts.

We’ve enjoyed hearing feedback from business customers who have started using BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 over the last month. Upgrading to BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 is an important step for businesses preparing to deploy the new BlackBerry 10 smartphones and manage them securely.

To help you and your business transition smoothly to BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, we’ve launched the BlackBerry Enterprise Service License Trade Up Program. This program will allow you to leverage your existing license investment to secure and manage your new BlackBerry 10 smartphones. The trade up process is easy and can be done in minutes – here’s a five-step guide to show you how:

1. Preparation

Before beginning the trade up process, you’ll want to make sure you have the following items at hand:

Client Access Licenses that you want to trade up

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server IDs currently in use in your environment

The BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 ID to which you are migrating

2. Setup

Once you’ve collected the three items listed above, head over to the BlackBerry Enterprise Service License Trade Up Program webpage. You’ll then be greeted by the following welcome screen, where you can select which language to proceed in.

You can choose either to complete the trade up process by yourself as a customer, or your carrier and/or IT partner can do so by changing the drop-down selection as seen here:

3. Account specifications

For the next steps, input the Client Access License keys, BlackBerry Enterprise Server ID, and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 ID you collected earlier in Step 1. You will also need to provide shipping details, including your company address, email address and, if registered, your BlackBerry Technical Support Services Subscription Code.

4. Trade Up

Based on information you’ve already entered, you will then be presented the quantity of licenses available for you to trade up. Partial trades are allowed. This means that if, for example, you currently own 2,000 BlackBerry Enterprise Server CALs, you can trade up 1,000 CALs on today’s transaction and redeem the remaining 1,000 on a later date. Once you’ve selected a quantity, you will be asked to accept the terms and conditions of the Trade Up.

5. Review and Download

After you’ve accepted the terms and conditions of the trade up, you can confirm and submit your order! Once you’ve submitted, you’ll see a trade up license download screen, pre-populated based on the information you’ve already entered. Now you’re set to download BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 and start deploying BlackBerry 10 to employees.

As you can see, we’ve really tried to make upgrading to BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 a quick and straightforward process. If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, feel free to share in the comments section!

(Originally posted on the Inside BlackBerry Blog)

We spent part of last week at BlackBerry Jam Europe, which is generally a conference dedicated to those who already develop apps for BlackBerry. However, there are also many programs for beginners. Since I’ve never created an app, I decided to take a run at developing an app for the Inside BlackBerry Blog. As I have literally no experience developing apps, I asked Alex and Luke for some help.

We used the BlackBerry App Generator to automatically pull content from the Inside BlackBerry Blog, and the BlackBerry Facebook and BlackBerry YouTube pages. It took us only about 10 minutes from start to finish and it was absolutely free. The result is a great-looking app that pulls in all of our articles, posts and videos. Let’s have a look as Alex walks us through the process.

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

See how easy it was? Using the BlackBerry App Generator you could have your own app up and running in just a few minutes, even with no development experience. Do you have a blog or content and think it would make a great app? Give the BlackBerry App Generator a try for yourself and let us know.

Enterprise developers who are looking to extend access to their SAP® Business Suite from the BlackBerry® platform are faced with many choices for how to do so. One of those choices is that of the middleware tier that will bridge the gap between the client side application and backend SAP Business Suite. Here we will explore SAP based middleware such as SAP NetWeaver® Application Server Web Services, SAP NetWeaver® Gateway, and the Sybase® Unwired Platform (SUP) that provide this bridge.

The guide posted below will help developers understand SAP middleware solutions, which can help remove one of the complexities of SAP in the mobile space. Key topics covered are:

SAP Mobile Continuum

SAP Middleware

Deploying and Managing Client Applications

Securing Enterprise Content

I was able to catch up with RIM’s Gregg Ostrowski, Sr. Director of Technical Solutions, and Jeff Holleran, Sr. Director of Enterprise Product Management, to chat about both developing enterprise apps as well as deploying them. Check out the video below for the details:

What is Mobile Application Management (MAM)?

MAM is a practice that organizations engage with in order to provision mobile apps to employee devices. Beyond this simple statement, the topic covers areas such as apps behind the firewall, security of and access to data, provisioning required applications, making apps available for voluntary download, and the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend.

RIM currently offers Mobile Application Management capabilities through our BlackBerry Enterprise Server and with BlackBerry® Mobile Fusion to BlackBerry smartphones, BlackBerry® PlayBookTM tablets, and iOS and Android™ devices. We’re streamlining the process for the future with BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 and BlackBerry 10, so read on for details!

Mobile Application Management with BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10

Mobile applications are becoming a crucial part of everyday life for mobile workers. We use apps to stay up to date on the latest information, to stay in touch with others, and to integrate with existing systems like Customer Relationship Management tools. BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 offers comprehensive application management to cover a variety of scenarios.

BlackBerry Balance and App World for both Work and Personal Spaces

On BlackBerry 10 devices, BlackBerry Balance functionality allows employees to switch seamlessly between work and personal spaces on the device. In the work space, App World operates as a portal for access to corporate application management. IT administrators can push required apps to BlackBerry 10 devices, provide a list of recommended apps from the public-facing App World directory, or make available apps that the company has developed. The recommended apps are available in App World within the work space of the device. Here employees can also check for updates and keep track of what corporate apps are installed.

Provisioning Apps with BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10

Personal and work applications are handled differently on BlackBerry 10 devices. Personal apps are installed to the personal space on the device, while corporate applications are kept separate, safe, and secure within the work space. These work apps can access work data and interact with other work applications, but have user-controlled access to personal data and cannot interact with personal applications on the device that have been installed to the personal space.

Software configurations can be used to bundle applications and then assign them to individual accounts or user groups. To remove applications from devices, administrators can simply remove the application from the software configuration.

Choices, Configurations, and Deployment

BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 is designed to help you manage and provision mandatory apps or recommended apps, both of which are kept secure within the work perimeter of BlackBerry 10 devices. App provisioning with BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 also extends beyond BlackBerry 10 smartphones to iOS and Android platforms, covering your multi-platform Mobile Application Management needs.

If you caught the BlackBerry Jam Americas 2012 keynote yesterday morning, you’ll have seen the fantastic app demo of Cisco® WebEx Meetings running on a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device. The app will bring the Cisco™ WebEx collaboration, conferencing, and screen sharing capabilities that so many organizations rely on to BlackBerry 10 devices at their launch in Q1 of 2013. I caught up with Mark Gervase of the Cisco team to chat about the upcoming app and what it means to take collaboration even further into a mobile environment. Check out the video below for the full scoop:

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

The Cisco WebEx Meetings app for BlackBerry 10 not only extends Cisco WebEx functionality to a mobile computing platform; it also embodies the flow, speed, and simplicity of the BlackBerry 10 experience. A few of the features include the ability to have the conference bridge call your phone to connect, and full screen sharing on the high resolution screen of your BlackBerry 10 device.
