There are countless reasons for you to attend BlackBerry Live, and this year more than ever! But I know that many of you are looking to have your company send you as a representative, and that this takes a business case and solid reasoning. We’re here to help. Read on for tips on how to convince your boss to let you experience BlackBerry Live 2013!

The mobile and MDM landscape is more complex than ever. Learn about industry trends and how you can solve challenges – and what the benefits are of a mobile strategy.

Mobility can be leveraged by a business to increase productivity, automate processes, drive down risks and inaccuracies, increase efficiency by allowing employees to be connected, and open up the world of enterprise apps. Coming back with ideas, tools, and resources to increase the return on investment that your company has made in mobility, and to suggest new ideas, makes the trip well worth it. See what an attendee of last year’s conference had to say:

“Technology is what drives our business, we have a passion for it and BlackBerry World [BlackBerry Live] gives us a glimpse into that future. For us it’s a platform to build upon, to engage with like-minded people and test theories and ideas which in turn help us to shape our business strategy.”

Managing multiple platforms, smartphones, and tablets doesn’t need to be costly or insecure. Learn more about how to enable your IT department to confidently support what’s being brought into work.

Sure, “BYOD” is a buzzword being thrown around left and right. But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a real challenge that businesses are facing – or an opportunity, depending on how you look at it. BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 provides secure and functional management of a wide range of mobile devices, and all from a single unified console. Heading to BlackBerry Live to get hands on with the solutions and hear from BlackBerry experts helps you to come back with insightful answers to solve your BYOD challenges, or to take advantage of the BYOD trend to enable your business’s productivity.

The sessions rock. Seriously. Learn more about solutions for your particular industry, find partnership opportunities, and get a glimpse into the future of mobile computing.

Every business wants to stay ahead of the curve as well as be both scalable and ready for challenges that are coming around the corner as we continue into 2013 and beyond. The BlackBerry Live sessions hold serious in-depth value and should be a major part of your proposal. Find opportunities to grow your business and see where mobility and your industry are headed. Check out the session tracks to call out specific areas that are valuable to your business or industry. The session catalog will be posted in detail shortly, and will be updated as we approach May 2013.

Need proof points? Here are some quotes and survey results from past attendees.

We’re constantly measuring and tweaking the BlackBerry Live conference, content, run-of-show, and so much more – all towards the goal of providing the most relevant and valuable experience possible for attendees. Here’s what we heard from last year’s conference:

“A great forum to meet and discuss [with] enterprise mobility professionals”

“Having access to senior and also technical people from RIM [BlackBerry] is a major reason I come to this event. No other platform does this as well.”

“BlackBerry World [BlackBerry Live] keeps us up to date and allows us to keep our customers informed.”

“I can use this event to better build my organization’s strategy.”

To add to the outstanding feedback that we received, over 91% of respondents noted that the session catalog covered topics that they wanted to hear about. The majority of attendees also stated that the conference increased their knowledge of BlackBerry products and services, rated the overall experience as “excellent”, and would attend again as well as recommend the conference to a colleague.

There’s a ton of buzz around BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. Find out what it’s all about, get hands-on experience, and see where BlackBerry is headed.

BlackBerry 10 is re-invented, re-engineered, and launching in market after market around the world. The feedback has been fantastic and we’re already seeing businesses leverage this new mobile computing platform in amazing ways. Find out what all of the buzz is about, get hands-on experience with the smartphones and tools, and learn about our vision for the future of mobile computing and enterprise mobility.

We’ve built a budget planner for you

On the BlackBerry Live web site you’ll find a budget planning tool that walks through your registration, hotel, training, airfare, transportation, and packages to help give you a clear look at your overall costs. Use this to bring specifics to your internal conversations as the investment that you’ll be making. The tool even creates a PDF that you can attach to an email – makes you look pretty good if you ask me!

And finally, here’s a sample email to start you off!

Hi (boss),

In looking for ways to help fine tune our mobile strategy, I’ve identified an opportunity to attend BlackBerry Live 2013 – the largest BlackBerry enterprise mobility conference of the year. The session tracks look relevant to our work and industry, there may be partnership opportunities, and it’s a chance to get ahead to look at where we’re headed in the future when it comes to enterprise mobility management. Here are a few ways that I think we’d see a return on the investment:

We’ll get a head start on industry trends when it comes to mobility, and a look at the tools that can help us stay sharp, secure, and productive

By networking, discussing, and meeting with my peers, I can gain insights into the challenges that others are facing and how they’re tackling them in their organizations

We can better leverage our existing investments in BlackBerry solutions and look to identify new ways to increase productivity

New partnership opportunities can help us to grow the business and identify efficiencies with our vendors

If we register before March 22nd, we’ll save 25% of the cost. Additional details can be found here. I’m more than happy to expand on the benefits or discuss further.

Get all of the details at www.blackberrylive.com. What are your tips to help others convince their boss to send them to BlackBerry Live 2013? What was the most valuable benefit of last year’s conference? Share in the comments below!

The Washington, D.C. stop in the BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour – Enterprise Edition was a very exciting event to attend. In the heart of government activity in the U.S., we were able to chat with both agency and enterprise developers to introduce the BlackBerry® 10 development tools as well as enterprise mobility management with the upcoming BlackBerry® Enterprise Service 10. Check out the video below for the full scoop:

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

What we learned, who was there, and what happened

BlackBerry 10 is getting all of us more excited every day. The live demonstration showcased fantastic UI elements like the flow, notification screen, and the BlackBerry Hub, as well as how application management is experienced by end users via App World and App World for Work. As a hobbyist BlackBerry developer on the side of my social media work at RIM, the screen real estate, crisp resolution, and smooth transitions have me itching to get started.

On that note, why not get started? With the BlackBerry 10 platform, developing for BlackBerry has never been easier. Whether you’re into HTML5 with WebWorks, Native Qt/C++ development with Cascades, or Adobe AIR – the SDK’s are available, BlackBerry Dev Alpha and Beta devices are being provided to eligible attendees, and the guides are plentiful on http://www.blackberry.com/developer. Many are also porting over their existing Android apps to the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ and BlackBerry 10 platform.

With functionality like BlackBerry MDS Connection Service included with BlackBerry Mobile Fusion and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, connecting to data behind a firewall becomes a very straightforward experience – no need to create a VPN connection and re-invent the wheel. What this means is that BlackBerry 10 apps will prove to not only be extremely aesthetically pleasing, but also vastly functional in an enterprise environment.

The feedback from developers was outstanding, as seen not only in the applause and energy during the BlackBerry 10 live demonstration, but also in countless conversations between attendees and the RIM development staff on-hand to help answer questions, provide more in-depth information, and get everyone up and running.

We’ll be in Chicago and New York!

The BlackBerry Jam World Tour – Enterprise Edition events are not over by any means. If you’re in the area, be sure to check out our plans for Chicago (Nov 28) and New York (Dec 12); register at www.blackberryjamenterprise.com!

As the trend for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) increases within the enterprise, organizations must establish criteria for an Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) solution that provides a balance of freedom for employees and security of corporate data. While end users want freedom of choice when it comes to the smartphones and tablets they use, organizations must address the added risks in security this freedom can bring in addition to potential unexplored issues in critical areas such as compliance, data, liability and support. By successfully deploying an EMM solution, IT can enable a company’s mobile workers and make the business more productive, efficient, agile, and responsive to the needs of the customers and employees.

Here are 7 key factors to consider while in the discovery phase of the search for MDM solutions:

Functionality – for example, how well the solution manages multiple mobile platforms, including BlackBerry®, iOS and Android™

Security features for data in transit and at rest

Reputation and reliability of vendor

Vendor support, including technical, sales, and account support

Management capabilities and policies

Availability of a complete solution

Flexibility of the solution to manage IT and user needs, as well as scalability

The opportunity – and the challenge – of finding the right EMM or MDM solution is to make workers and organizations more productive through enhanced mobility and the expanded use of personal-liable devices. There is no doubt, though, that this is a trend that is here to stay. IT administrators need MDM solutions to deliver the security, management capabilities, scalability and stability required in this new paradigm.

RIM® offers BlackBerry® Mobile Fusion, which provides unified management of BlackBerry smartphones, BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablets, and iOS or Android operating systems. BlackBerry Mobile Fusion also supports BlackBerry® Balance™ technology which enables IT to establish and enforce policies that separate personal and business data and allows IT admins to remote-wipe corporate data from devices if necessary, while leaving personal data untouched.

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

In August, we introduced the next generation EMM solution, BlackBerry® Enterprise Service 10 (BES 10). BES 10 is the future of managing your organizations’ mobile deployment with a single platform and the evolution of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, ActiveSync, and BlackBerry Mobile Fusion. BES 10 represents a consolidation of our enterprise mobility management (EMM) product portfolio, which includes our MDM, security, infrastructure, and app management products. In an update scheduled for May 2013, new features will allow you to upgrade your current BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5 to BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, providing a solution which integrates with your current deployment.

To learn more about finding the right MDM solution for your enterprise, register for, or log into, the BlackBerry Resource Center and take a look at The 7 Key Factors in Choosing a Mobile Device Management Solution.
It’s been an exciting week so far here in San Jose at BlackBerry Jam Americas 2012. Beyond the infectious developer enthusiasm and the value-packed breakout sessions, we’ve also had the chance to showcase a few more features of the upcoming BlackBerry® 10 platform. Today I’d like to share some details about Mobile Application Management (MAM) with BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. I was able to catch up with RIM’s Gregg Ostrowski, Sr. Director of Technical Solutions, and Jeff Holleran, Sr. Director of Enterprise Product Management, to chat about both developing enterprise apps as well as deploying them. Check out the video below for the details:

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

What is Mobile Application Management (MAM)?

MAM is a practice that organizations engage with in order to provision mobile apps to employee devices. Beyond this simple statement, the topic covers areas such as apps behind the firewall, security of and access to data, provisioning required applications, making apps available for voluntary download, and the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend.

RIM currently offers Mobile Application Management capabilities through our BlackBerry Enterprise Server and with BlackBerry® Mobile Fusion to BlackBerry smartphones, BlackBerry® PlayBookTM tablets, and iOS and Android™ devices. We’re streamlining the process for the future with BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 and BlackBerry 10, so read on for details!

Mobile Application Management with BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10

Mobile applications are becoming a crucial part of everyday life for mobile workers. We use apps to stay up to date on the latest information, to stay in touch with others, and to integrate with existing systems like Customer Relationship Management tools. BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 offers comprehensive application management to cover a variety of scenarios.

BlackBerry Balance and App World for both Work and Personal Spaces

On BlackBerry 10 devices, BlackBerry Balance functionality allows employees to switch seamlessly between work and personal spaces on the device. In the work space, App World operates as a portal for access to corporate application management. IT administrators can push required apps to BlackBerry 10 devices, provide a list of recommended apps from the public-facing App World directory, or make available apps that the company has developed. The recommended apps are available in App World within the work space of the device. Here employees can also check for updates and keep track of what corporate apps are installed.

Provisioning Apps with BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10

Personal and work applications are handled differently on BlackBerry 10 devices. Personal apps are installed to the personal space on the device, while corporate applications are kept separate, safe, and secure within the work space. These work apps can access work data and interact with other work applications, but have user-controlled access to personal data and cannot interact with personal applications on the device that have been installed to the personal space.

Software configurations can be used to bundle applications and then assign them to individual accounts or user groups. To remove applications from devices, administrators can simply remove the application from the software configuration.

Choices, Configurations, and Deployment

BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 is designed to help you manage and provision mandatory apps or recommended apps, both of which are kept secure within the work perimeter of BlackBerry 10 devices. App provisioning with BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 also extends beyond BlackBerry 10 smartphones to iOS and Android platforms, covering your multi-platform Mobile Application Management needs.

How is your organization managing applications on mobile devices today? What features do you wish were available, and which do you use most often? Share in the comments below.

With mobile innovation at an all-time high and a variety of devices available to consumers in the business community, enterprises are now faced with a new challenge – the “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) trend. Employees who use functional consumer devices now want to bring them to work and use them to handle the valuable tasks that businesses expect to be completed at any time and from any place.

Devank Kumar, Manager of Enterprise Systems and Network Security at TRC, understood that the BYOD trend could potentially save the company money in new devices and training, but only if he could meet the challenge of managing multiple mobile Operating System (“OS”) environments in the enterprise. A longtime BlackBerry® smartphone client, TRC wanted to avoid having to deploy multiple Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions that would result in additional costs and training for help desk staff to handle separate interfaces.

The company initially integrated a different MDM provider to manage the BYOD trend but quickly found that it did not offer the appropriate solution that it needed. When Research In Motion® (RIM®) announced BlackBerry® Mobile Fusion in late 2011; TRC Solutions’ Chief Technology Officer requested that the company implement it as soon as it became available as its multi-platform MDM solution.

“Our company liked the assurances that the BlackBerry solution offered,” said Kumar. “We have had BlackBerry smartphones deployed for many years and still manage more than 500 BlackBerry devices on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, so finding this simple, yet secure MDM solution was really important.”

TRC has started a gradual deployment process of BlackBerry Mobile Fusion to manage its employee’s mobile devices throughout its U.S. offices. The company can now connect its existing BlackBerry Enterprise Server with iOS® and Android™ smartphones and tablets and manage them all from one place, integrating existing BlackBerry Enterprise Server management and security capabilities for iOS and for Android devices.

“It is a logical evolution for companies like us who have leveraged BlackBerry Enterprise Server in the past,” said Kumar. “Rather than require the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to co-exist with an outside MDM solution, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion allows us to maintain all of the benefits of our current BlackBerry solution and evolve with BYOD trends with one MDM.”

This BlackBerry solution will help to avoid the duplication of effort involved with managing multiple platforms separately and prevent the need to train its helpdesk to learn two different systems.

Deploying BlackBerry Mobile Fusion will also mean that the company can avoid dealing with multiple vendors, contracts and support calls. The company can call one number to receive tech support for management on BlackBerry smartphones as well as for other devices.

“It just makes sense,” said Kumar. “Why would we integrate a completely new system that takes time to put through a test environment and train the help desk when BlackBerry Mobile Fusion allows us to move forward with one unified interface and management system?”

How are you dealing with consumerization? Have you got a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution or strategy in place? What types of policies are acceptable to IT, end users and executives? These are the kind of questions I discussed with attendees during a recent BlackBerry® Innovation Forum session in Toronto. The answers cover the gamut with some leading the pack, and others just beginning to be researched. Have a listen to what attendees had to say about MDM, consumerization, and their thoughts around BlackBerry® Mobile Fusion:

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

It’s clear that MDM is a major item on the horizon and will be an integral part of IT project plans in the immediate future.

There are, of course, several sessions throughout BlackBerry World™ that touch on MDM, specifically BlackBerry Mobile Fusion. To get the most out of your time with the BlackBerry product experts, you’ll want to come prepared, and deploying BlackBerry Mobile Fusion in your environment in advance of the conference is a step in this direction. Getting your hands on the product, rolling up your sleeves and digging in allows you to prioritize your questions and make the most of the Research In Motion® (RIM®) experts and technology peers from other companies that you’ll have access to on site at BlackBerry World.

How are you preparing for BlackBerry World? Have you downloaded BlackBerry Mobile Fusion yet?

Examining how BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, BlackBerry Device Service and BlackBerry Enterprise Server work as secure mobility device management solutions.

I’m thrilled to take the opportunity today to discuss with you Mobile Device Management (MDM) in the enterprise, and to present a clear picture of the roadmap for what many have known and loved as the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server. Conversation has steadily heated up since BlackBerry® Mobile Fusion was announced, followed by the launch of BlackBerry® PlayBook™ OS 2.0 and the BlackBerry® Device Service for BlackBerry Mobile Fusion. Now the question has been asked: how do all of these pieces fit together, and where is it all going? You may also be wondering:

Is RIM getting rid of BlackBerry Enterprise Server?

What does the inclusion of Microsoft® ActiveSync® protocols mean for security?

Can iOS and Android devices (both tablets and smartphones) be managed with BlackBerry Mobile Fusion? Will the management be secure?

How will BlackBerry® 10 devices be managed?

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion: BlackBerry Enterprise Server and More

BlackBerry Enterprise Server has a rich history and is recognized as the most secure enterprise mobility device management solution available. Since its inception, the solution has grown in functionality, scalability, and a wide variety of other feature sets, and is now on version 5.0.3.

In the meantime, things in the market have gotten a bit messy and more than a bit challenging for IT administrators, IT specialists, and CIOs. Organizations are under pressure to support a wide variety of devices from multiple manufacturers, as well as multiple form factors, with tablets gaining steam as business tools. As a longstanding pillar of MDM in the enterprise, we’ve worked to provide a clean, simple, and secure solution to help you manage whatever gets thrown your way. This is BlackBerry Mobile Fusion. It’s a huge leap forward for device management, and it’s built on the valued security model introduced with BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The evolution of BlackBerry Enterprise Server is BlackBerry Mobile Fusion.

Microsoft ActiveSync: What’s the Deal?

With BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0, the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet adds support for Microsoft ActiveSync technology. ActiveSync is a common email/PIM synchronization and transport protocol, which is used by Microsoft® Exchange and other on-premise and cloud mail/messaging providers. Microsoft ActiveSync on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is designed to allow consumers to connect to popular mail platforms such as Gmail® or Windows Live™. Individuals and small businesses can also use its transport functions for integration with Microsoft® Exchange, IBM® Lotus® Notes Traveler, and other Microsoft ActiveSync enabled systems.

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion leverages Microsoft ActiveSync as an email and PIM sync protocol while providing enterprises with many of the same advantages that a BlackBerry Enterprise Server does for a BlackBerry smartphone. Namely, a straightforward yet highly secure connectivity model: proven BlackBerry end-to-end 256-bit encryption, and a behind-the-firewall path for applications, the browser, email, and PIM.

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion and Corporate Data Security

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion is designed to establish and maintain a BlackBerry Secure Connection from the business network to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, leveraging the unique RIM infrastructure that IT departments around the world know and trust. Additionally, BlackBerry® Balance™ technology on BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 and enabled BlackBerry® smartphones is designed to create a secure corporate perimeter so that all corporate applications and data remain secure on a device and separate from personal data.

With BlackBerry Balance and secure enterprise connectivity, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion provides leading platform-level security for BlackBerry PlayBook tablets and future BlackBerry 10 devices (smartphones and tablets), enabling administrators to manage, secure, and audit corporate data and applications, while preserving a seamless and personal user experience.

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion is also designed to enable companies to push applications directly to end users, or make them available for users to optionally download. The apps will conveniently appear in a tab labeled “Work” in BlackBerry App World™. End users get the rich app experience they expect, while enterprise data is kept separate and secure.

Managing iOS and Android Devices

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion extends the BlackBerry mobile device management to iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. BlackBerry Mobile Fusion supports the latest MDM capabilities available in iOS and Android, and is designed to enable administrators to apply corporate policies and configurations to manage and secure these devices. Additionally, customers will be able to leverage the application management capabilities of BlackBerry Mobile Fusion to manage the distribution of mobile applications to employees on these platforms.

Customers can of course leverage their existing investments, relationships, and support agreements with RIM to consistently and securely manage the personal and company owned mobile devices used by employees.

BlackBerry 10: How Mobile Fusion Prepares You for the Future

The benefits that BlackBerry Mobile Fusion provides customers today for managing the deployment and use of BlackBerry PlayBook tablets will also apply when BlackBerry 10 devices arrive later this year. This means that customers can deploy BlackBerry Mobile Fusion now knowing that managing future BlackBerry 10 devices will be seamless.

Conclusion: One MDM Solution to Manage Them All

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion is a unified, multi-platform, mobile device management solution. It will provide one place to manage BlackBerry PlayBook tablets and future BlackBerry 10 devices (tablets and smartphones), as well as iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.

Building on a foundation of over 10 years of experience in mobile device management (MDM), BlackBerry Mobile Fusion makes RIM the best partner for MDM solutions. This means that enterprise customers only have to contact one trusted global vendor for support.
