There are countless reasons for you to attend BlackBerry Live, and this year more than ever! But I know that many of you are looking to have your company send you as a representative, and that this takes a business case and solid reasoning. We’re here to help. Read on for tips on how to convince your boss to let you experience BlackBerry Live 2013!

The mobile and MDM landscape is more complex than ever. Learn about industry trends and how you can solve challenges – and what the benefits are of a mobile strategy.

Mobility can be leveraged by a business to increase productivity, automate processes, drive down risks and inaccuracies, increase efficiency by allowing employees to be connected, and open up the world of enterprise apps. Coming back with ideas, tools, and resources to increase the return on investment that your company has made in mobility, and to suggest new ideas, makes the trip well worth it. See what an attendee of last year’s conference had to say:

“Technology is what drives our business, we have a passion for it and BlackBerry World [BlackBerry Live] gives us a glimpse into that future. For us it’s a platform to build upon, to engage with like-minded people and test theories and ideas which in turn help us to shape our business strategy.”

Managing multiple platforms, smartphones, and tablets doesn’t need to be costly or insecure. Learn more about how to enable your IT department to confidently support what’s being brought into work.

Sure, “BYOD” is a buzzword being thrown around left and right. But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a real challenge that businesses are facing – or an opportunity, depending on how you look at it. BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 provides secure and functional management of a wide range of mobile devices, and all from a single unified console. Heading to BlackBerry Live to get hands on with the solutions and hear from BlackBerry experts helps you to come back with insightful answers to solve your BYOD challenges, or to take advantage of the BYOD trend to enable your business’s productivity.

The sessions rock. Seriously. Learn more about solutions for your particular industry, find partnership opportunities, and get a glimpse into the future of mobile computing.

Every business wants to stay ahead of the curve as well as be both scalable and ready for challenges that are coming around the corner as we continue into 2013 and beyond. The BlackBerry Live sessions hold serious in-depth value and should be a major part of your proposal. Find opportunities to grow your business and see where mobility and your industry are headed. Check out the session tracks to call out specific areas that are valuable to your business or industry. The session catalog will be posted in detail shortly, and will be updated as we approach May 2013.

Need proof points? Here are some quotes and survey results from past attendees.

We’re constantly measuring and tweaking the BlackBerry Live conference, content, run-of-show, and so much more – all towards the goal of providing the most relevant and valuable experience possible for attendees. Here’s what we heard from last year’s conference:

“A great forum to meet and discuss [with] enterprise mobility professionals”

“Having access to senior and also technical people from RIM [BlackBerry] is a major reason I come to this event. No other platform does this as well.”

“BlackBerry World [BlackBerry Live] keeps us up to date and allows us to keep our customers informed.”

“I can use this event to better build my organization’s strategy.”

To add to the outstanding feedback that we received, over 91% of respondents noted that the session catalog covered topics that they wanted to hear about. The majority of attendees also stated that the conference increased their knowledge of BlackBerry products and services, rated the overall experience as “excellent”, and would attend again as well as recommend the conference to a colleague.

There’s a ton of buzz around BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. Find out what it’s all about, get hands-on experience, and see where BlackBerry is headed.

BlackBerry 10 is re-invented, re-engineered, and launching in market after market around the world. The feedback has been fantastic and we’re already seeing businesses leverage this new mobile computing platform in amazing ways. Find out what all of the buzz is about, get hands-on experience with the smartphones and tools, and learn about our vision for the future of mobile computing and enterprise mobility.

We’ve built a budget planner for you

On the BlackBerry Live web site you’ll find a budget planning tool that walks through your registration, hotel, training, airfare, transportation, and packages to help give you a clear look at your overall costs. Use this to bring specifics to your internal conversations as the investment that you’ll be making. The tool even creates a PDF that you can attach to an email – makes you look pretty good if you ask me!

And finally, here’s a sample email to start you off!

Hi (boss),

In looking for ways to help fine tune our mobile strategy, I’ve identified an opportunity to attend BlackBerry Live 2013 – the largest BlackBerry enterprise mobility conference of the year. The session tracks look relevant to our work and industry, there may be partnership opportunities, and it’s a chance to get ahead to look at where we’re headed in the future when it comes to enterprise mobility management. Here are a few ways that I think we’d see a return on the investment:

We’ll get a head start on industry trends when it comes to mobility, and a look at the tools that can help us stay sharp, secure, and productive

By networking, discussing, and meeting with my peers, I can gain insights into the challenges that others are facing and how they’re tackling them in their organizations

We can better leverage our existing investments in BlackBerry solutions and look to identify new ways to increase productivity

New partnership opportunities can help us to grow the business and identify efficiencies with our vendors

If we register before March 22nd, we’ll save 25% of the cost. Additional details can be found here. I’m more than happy to expand on the benefits or discuss further.

Get all of the details at www.blackberrylive.com. What are your tips to help others convince their boss to send them to BlackBerry Live 2013? What was the most valuable benefit of last year’s conference? Share in the comments below!

Did you know that both VISA and MasterCard have certified BlackBerry smartphones with NFC capabilities to be used for mobile payments?

Over the last couple of years, NFC technology has become increasingly popular in smartphones. Recent blog posts on the Inside BlackBerry for Business blog have shown that NFC-enabled devices can be used for a wide range of tasks, including access to your workplace and paying for your morning coffee. NFC has enabled many of us to see our BlackBerry smartphone as not only an important communications tool, but also as an efficient, contactless payment tool. When considering the use of a smartphone for mobile payments security is a major factor.

If you’re interested in learning more about some of the security features embedded in your BlackBerry smartphone when using it as a mobile payment solution, here are the details – straight from the BlackBerry experts!

According to our BlackBerry Security Certification Manager, Nayef Khan, “One major concern customers have when making mobile payments is security. A lot of focus in the mobile industry is put on the security of the “payment tap” process and overall device security. However, what’s often overlooked is how a credit card’s information travels directly to a smartphone, and how that overall data transmission process is secured.” In the NFC industry the systems that get your credit card data securely onto the device are called Trusted Service Managers (TSM). They are a key part of making NFC payments secure. BlackBerry is actively working on TSM functionality. The certification of BlackBerry as a VISA approved Trusted Service Manager (TSM) proves that the world’s top banking organizations recognize the high level of BlackBerry security standards.

So what are Trusted Service Managers (TSMs)?

A TSM is a cloud-based service that creates a secure communication channel between your NFC-enabled smartphone and the financial institution’s payment tool. The BlackBerry solution is designed to create a secure location within a ,secure container called a “Secure Element.” This secure storage area on an NFC-enabled smartphone enables financial institutions to store the sensitive payment information directly within the smartphone.

Our implementation of the TSM is known in the mobile payments industry as a “Secure Element Manager” (SEM). The SEM is responsible for managing space on a Secure Element. SEM also grants access to this secure space to mobile network operators or issuers of credit cards (know as Service Provider TSM or SP-TSM). Through the infrastructure that our SEM provides, SP-TSMs will have a single secure gateway allowing them to support any customer with an NFC-enabled smartphone that wants to enable a “mobile wallet” application. While the provisioning of credit card information is left to the SP-TSMs, the SEM allows for them to make a secure connection to the Secure Element. This arrangement also makes our solution highly scalable – new issuers can be on-boarded quickly.

Can you clarify what a secure element is, exactly?

As an analogy, think of the Secure Element as an apartment building. The manager of the apartment building (BlackBerry) allows each individual apartment (location for issuers and application providers) to be unlocked by a unique key. New tenants (issuers and application providers) can move in as soon as they are approved by the manager and provided with the key.

Visa’s approval of the BlackBerry SEM shows that we have been able to meet the rigorous standards that are expected in the financial industry. Over the years, BlackBerry has been associated with strong security and we are using our experience to build a secure foundation in this new domain.

Securing the “payment tap”

We have talked about how we secure the transmission and storage of sensitive information. In order to provide end-to-end security for a mobile payment transaction, the payment process also needs to be secure. Ever since BlackBerry launched NFC-capable smartphones, we have been working with the financial industry and credit card companies to certify our devices for use of mobile payments. The BlackBerry Curve 9360 and BlackBerry Bold 9900 were among the first smartphones to be certified by MasterCard and Visa for NFC-based mobile payments.

These certifications were granted on the basis of the BlackBerry smartphones meeting the functionality, interoperability and security requirements of MasterCard and Visa. The process includes extensive technical, security, and usability testing. This helps to ensure reliable and secure transactions which are compatible with the global standard for chip-enabled payments. With these certifications, any MasterCard PayPass or Visa payWave issuing bank globally will be able to deploy accounts to the SIM card of these smartphones.

Currently, all NFC-enabled BlackBerry devices in market have received the necessary payments certification. We have also done some great work with our brand new BlackBerry 10 platform. Looking at the device and back-end certifications in unison, BlackBerry is undeniably at the center of NFC innovation. The tools and security are available; we expect wireless carriers and financial institutions to pursue mobile payment solutions using BlackBerry smartphones in the near future – and some have already been implemented.

The new BlackBerry 10 platform aims to improve mobility for both businesses and employees. Part 1 of this series discussed how BlackBerry 10 can help to improve businesses by meeting employee consumer demands and lowering costs, among other benefits. Here are 5 more business objectives that IT professionals will be able to achieve with BlackBerry 10.

Develop and deploy enterprise applications

With BlackBerry 10, you can take advantage of the best ecosystem for business app developers. In the weeks leading up to last month’s BlackBerry 10 launch, we saw an exciting acceleration of developer momentum culminating with the availability of key business apps. With BlackBerry 10, enterprise developers specifically have much to be excited about:

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

Enterprise applications can be tailored to specific jobs and work processes within your company. Your business can deploy BlackBerry 10 applications for your employees through BlackBerry World for Work and manage them securely with BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 (BES 10).

Increase customer satisfaction

To keep customers satisfied, businesses must adopt an effective framework for internal communication. More specifically, customer-facing employees must have real-time access to critical information in order to accurately assist customers. With the new user experience of BlackBerry 10, your employees will be able to access information in an effective, intuitive manner. In addition, tools for the BlackBerry 10 platform such as HTML5 WebWorks make it easy to develop custom applications for customers to interact with your company.

Reduce staffing costs with global technical support

Are you familiar with BlackBerry Technical Support Services (BTSS)? It’s our global enterprise support program that provides businesses with affordable technical support directly from BlackBerry support experts. For BlackBerry 10, we’ve streamlined the program into three tiers – Basic, Advantage, and Premium – as well as offering BlackBerry 10 Readiness Services. With direct access to a Support Service Specialist as an option at the Advantage tier, you can reduce internal staffing costs while still equipping your business with the technical support you need.

Provide access to critical business information

Whether you are making a presentation, joining a meeting, or making a business decision, it is important to be prepared and well-informed. BlackBerry 10 provides hands-on access to industry news and other business content, mobilizing your workforce with tools to work effectively on the go. With the SAP applications that are coming to BlackBerry 10, your employees will be able to make informed decisions by accessing and interacting with the latest data available.

Simplify your IT manager’s job

Your IT manager faces a mobile landscape that is constantly evolving toward greater complexity. As demands from business users increase, your IT department will need to properly balance mobility and security needs. BlackBerry 10 introduces a mobile platform that meets both the consumer demands of business users and the security demands of IT departments. In addition, BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 (BES 10) simplifies your IT manager’s job with a single, unified platform to manage BlackBerry, iOS and Android devices securely.

An important goal of the BlackBerry 10 platform is to improve the mobile experience of businesses and their staff. Building on the long-standing reputation of BlackBerry smartphones in the business community, here is a look at several business objectives that IT professionals can look to achieve with BlackBerry 10.

Meet increasing employee demands

The consumerization of information technology has changed the workplace and brought with it increased employee demands. As mobile technology continues to evolve, businesses are under pressure to either provide employees with high-performance mobile devices that offer a seamless experience, or to allow employees to bring in their own mobile tech. On BlackBerry 10, features such as the BlackBerry Browser and Keyboard have been made more powerful and intuitive. In addition, new advanced features such as the flow of BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry Hub will make it easier for employees to navigate their phone and manage information, all within the context of our world-class security and management capabilities. With these features, as well as all of the apps available at launch, BlackBerry 10 provides an experience that employees will love and the security and manageability that businesses need.

Increase productivity and mobility

The BlackBerry 10 platform is built for business, providing your mobile workers with secure access to information and internal systems. One exciting BlackBerry 10 feature is remote desktop access provided by app developers like Splashtop. This feature will allow BlackBerry customers to access and control a desktop computer from their BlackBerry 10 smartphone. By using such tools to increase mobility, employees will be able to carry critical business information and tools on the go, thus also increasing their productivity.

Encourage organizational collaboration

Businesses can further look to improve productivity by facilitating a culture of collaboration. Several upcoming BlackBerry 10 apps will help encourage this collaborative culture, such as Cisco WebEx Meetings. This app helps customers with scheduling meetings, sharing screens and sharing content for collaboration on the go. In addition, BlackBerry 10 includes integrated cloud storage capabilities from Box, which allows employees to share files directly from their devices. Supported by the BlackBerry 10 secure environment, businesses can encourage collaboration confidently, knowing that measures have been taken to help make sure that data isn’t compromised. BBM video chat and screen sharing is another example of a fantastic collaboration opportunity provided by the BlackBerry 10 platform, not to mention Documents To Go, Work Drives, and more.

Contributing to lower costs

BlackBerry Balance has been completely redesigned for BlackBerry 10, providing customers with a seamless flow between work and personal use. BlackBerry Balance also helps to lower costs for IT departments by allowing employees to bring their own devices to work. By separating work and personal data, business professionals can use personal online accounts and consumer apps on their work device without needing to worry about unintended interactions.

Integrate your mobile computing capabilities

More than just a smartphone, BlackBerry 10 is a mobile computing platform built to power an entire ecosystem of devices and systems. Businesses can offer their workforce greater connectivity by expanding their focus from just devices to platform-based environments. Designed to support the concept of a “mobile office,” BlackBerry 10 will consolidate desktop computer and phone capabilities into a single, integrated platform. This integrated approach provides IT departments with the versatility to prepare for the mobile landscape of the future. With apps like SAP and Cisco WebEx Meetings, you can extend your existing investment in these services and pursue a truly integrated approach.

(Shameless self-disclaimer: I’m a file hoarder of the worst sort. PowerPoint presentations on the enterprise road map from 2007? Still got ‘em. Press release from BlackBerry Pearl smartphone launch? In my media kit folder. Photos from my high school Euro-trip? Purple hair…what was I thinking?!)

Luckily for me, with BlackBerry 10, I now have access to my digital underworld of perfectly organized online file folders, spanning the far depths of my carefully curated folder collection.

Now that BlackBerry 10 has launched, we can officially spill the beans. Some of our favorite online file management and collaboration tools come not just pre-loaded, but deeply integrated into the BlackBerry 10 platform! With the graceful swipe of a fingertip, all BlackBerry 10 smartphone customers can now easily flow on over to a wide array of well-known and secure cloud storage and collaboration tools – Box and DropBox in particular.

With these tools, you can attach files from the cloud straight from the BlackBerry Hub, without needing to switch apps or leave your “compose” screen. There’s also the ability to press the “share” button (ie. when viewing a photo, file or video), and add that file directly into your cloud storage space. Using BlackBerry Balance, there is also the ability to see files from both your personal and work profile, if your work space is unlocked.

We’ve also designed it so that when you’re looking at content with File Manager, or when opening documents in Documents To Go, you can browse all of your cloud accounts too. Even your “recently used documents” include your latest cloud files!

For those who’ve already jumped on the cloud storage bandwagon – virtual high five! Points to you for your file-saving and sharing prowess. For those who have yet to experience the time-saving benefits, you are definitely going to appreciate why these tools have become so popular with the IT and business crowd. Using cloud storage apps like Box and DropBox means you can easily save, share and store files, all safely and securely in your own personal online file storage space. These tools allow you to virtually share your folders with friends, colleagues and business partners – no more need to exchange an old fashioned USB stick or be the culprit of sending the 20MB PowerPoint attachment that clogs up everyone’s inbox (queue collective sigh of relief).

At BlackBerry, we know our customers are powerful multi-taskers, always on the go with places to be and people to see. That’s why integrating cloud-based file sharing tools directly into our BlackBerry 10 platform was an easy decision. When drafting an email on your BlackBerry smartphone, having the ability to quickly flow over to your file management center and choose your file storage app of choice, is not only super convenient – but also a quick way to get stuff done. Through my testing of the file storage and sharing capabilities, I also quickly figured out that when drafting an email or document, all you have to do is click the attachment icon to add attachments – this happens instantly – straight from the cloud! Built on a core BlackBerry 10 cornerstone of removing the need for the old in-and-out paradigm, there was no need to switch between my file storage app and my email to add the attachment. Everything I needed to access to add my attachment was all at my fingertips by tapping the attachment icon!

I also prefer to travel without my laptop. With BlackBerry 10, I use cloud storage to simplify my life. By bringing my photos, docs, PowerPoints, spreadsheets and videos anywhere I go with my BlackBerry 10 smartphone, I can easily share my files wherever I am in the world. Last week, I was in a meeting and didn’t even need to bring my laptop to present a blog story idea to my colleagues. I was able to pull up my PowerPoint presentation via my cloud storage app of choice on my BlackBerry 10 smartphone. I quickly plugged in my micro HDMI cable, opened my cloud storage app and presented to everyone on our office projection screen – all from my BlackBerry 10 smartphone.

The possibilities are endless for staying organized with BlackBerry 10.

Have you tried out any of the file management apps mentioned in this blog post? If so, how has the experience been? Let me know by commenting below!

IT decision-makers and CIOs know that behind-the-firewall connectivity options with BlackBerry are a well-known industry differentiator. Security is embedded within BlackBerry’s DNA – secure encryption, FIPS 140-2 certification, and the most third-party security certifications makes BlackBerry the smartphone of choice for some of the world’s most security conscious organizations.

BlackBerry Work Drives is a free application for BlackBerry 10 devices that requires BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. This app enables BlackBerry customers to remotely access, edit and manage content located on enterprise network drives. Once the network drives are mapped through the Work Drives applications, native applications like File Manager and Documents To Go can be used to manage the network files and folders.

Key Features of the Work Drives app

Mapping Network Drives: Connect and manage multiple network drives from your BlackBerry 10 smartphone

File Manager Integration: Access documents and network folders from the File Manager application

Document Management: Create and edit documents located on network drives using BlackBerry 10 applications like the bundled Documents To Go

Email: Attach documents to email from shared network drives, and save attachments directly from an email to a shared network drive

Note: BlackBerry Work Drives is supported on BlackBerry 10 devices provisioned on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. It requires installation of BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 and BlackBerry Balance and works in the Work perimeter only. It requires BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.0 and above.

Putting BlackBerry Work Drives to Work

Throughout my testing of this capability, I was pleased to be able to edit my team budget via our shared network drive on my BlackBerry 10 smartphone, and upload the revised file back into our team drive – all from the comfort of my couch at home. All I had to do was connect my team’s network drive to my Work Drive application by typing in the network path and my login credentials. The network drive is also saved in my File Manager app, so I only needed to type in the file path once. Once your network drives are mapped through the Work Drives application, native applications like File Manager and Documents To Go kick in to help organize and manage the network files and folders.

Having the ability to access files stored on my various network drives with the tap of an icon from my smartphone means I have the freedom to work on whatever I need to, whenever I need to. Having this capability fully integrated within the BlackBerry 10 platform is an undeniable bonus for those who use network drives in their daily work. I don’t need to go into the office to plug in (although my BlackBerry co-workers are awesome), or carry my laptop around in my already overstuffed work bag to have direct access to my corporate network drive. After speaking with the product team about BlackBerry Work Drives on BlackBerry 10, it’s clear that we are committed to empowering connected BlackBerry customers who we know will embrace the mobility capabilities fully integrated within their BlackBerry 10 smartphone.

Do you use network drives at work? How will you use Work Drives on BlackBerry 10 to be productive on the go? Share in the comments below.

We’ve had a fantastic holiday break, and we’re well-rested and unabashedly excited for one of the most significant months in the history of BlackBerry. This month we launch BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, pushing forward the mobile computing landscape with innovations on the handheld and enterprise mobility management.

It can be easy to mistaken BlackBerry 10 as simply another new smartphone that will get some space on the shelves. But for those of us who work in the industry, and particularly at Research In Motion, we see it quite differently. BlackBerry 10 is a whole new platform that has unparalleled multitasking capabilities, gesture-based interactions, and is rich with features that can serve your personal and work lives 24/7. Every feature, every gesture, and every detail is designed to keep you moving.

The BlackBerry infrastructure is strong, connecting over 79 million subscribers worldwide for crucial business communications, as well as friends and loved ones alike. Fortune 500 companies trust our solutions with deep partnerships and customer relationships, and small businesses are being empowered every day to stay connected and move their work forward. BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 represents a decade of evolving enterprise mobility management solutions that have brought us to this point – a cross-platform management solution that provides administrators with a single web-based console for handling BlackBerry, iOS, and Android smartphones and tablets.

RIM is a new company. The transition that we’ve undergone over the past year is dramatic – and I have the before-and-after perspective with my nearly six years at the company. We’re leaner, laser-focused, and absolutely intent on changing the mobile computing landscape.

On the road to launching BlackBerry 10, we’ve re-designed, re-engineered and re-invented BlackBerry to create a new unique mobile experience. We’ve had countless meetings with customers, carriers, developers, analysts, and journalists, and come away from those meetings with incredibly positive reactions to the new platform. BlackBerry 10 is nearly ready, and we can’t wait.

Welcome to 2013!

The mobile communications landscape for businesses is rapidly changing, and it’s important to keep up and maintain consistent and reliable support for your ever-growing needs. In addition to being faced with managing multiple mobile platforms, like BlackBerry®, iOS, and Android™, many large enterprises are also faced with the unique challenges that come with having an international business presence. A major challenge is finding scalable, worldwide mobility solutions and the organization that can support deployments across borders and regions.

Detailing a case study of Gedeon Richter Vietnam and how they use BlackBerry smartphones to help mobilize their business.

Gedeon Richter Vietnam (Gedeon Richter) is a representative office of the multinational pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter PLC. The sales team of Gedeon Richter is already quite mobile, using motorcycles as their primary mode of transportation to meet with clients and navigate the traffic of Vietnam. As with any sales force, the team needed easy access to information and communication, but with maximum convenience and low bulk.

BlackBerry® smartphones were used to further mobilize their on-the-go sales force, allowing them to travel light without compromising the access to company data. With the abundance of Wi-Fi® hotspots available in the cities, they were able to cut data costs, further increasing the return on investment of the mobile equipment.

You may not live in Vietnam and ride a motorcycle as part of your work, but mobilizing a sales force with the proper equipment and keeping them connected to your Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solution is still a crucial parallel that can be drawn. BlackBerry® Enterprise Express allowed Gedeon Richter to manage the devices and plug into their existing CRM tools and Microsoft® Exchange mail server, rounding out the solution and representing cost efficiency. Check out the PDF below to read the full case study:
