BBM: Security You Can Trust

BBM Protected Balance

When it comes to enterprise messaging solutions, security and privacy are top of mind. With security conscious organizations more concerned than ever before about threats like hacking, spying, data leakage, compliance and reputational damage, it’s important that enterprises ask the right questions about secure enterprise messaging solutions – not all are created equal.  We are committed to providing the most demanding businesses with products and services designed to enable mobile workers to be more productive, while meeting enterprises’ needs for security, manageability and control.

BBM takes measures to ensure contacts’ identities

The very nature of the relationship between BBM contacts requires one party to send an invitation and the other to accept that invitation. Customers also have the ability to require the other party know a security question when responding to an invite.

Our secure enterprise messaging application, BBM Enterprise (formerly known as BBM Protected), takes this one step farther. Through the use of an out-of-band secret passphrase sent via email, SMS or exchanged in person, the identity of the two participants is validated. This secret passphrase protects the exchange of encryption and signing keys.

BBM publishes its security design and audits its code

We believe strongly in publishing our security design and encourage others to do the same. You can find the security designs for both BBM and BBM Enterprise at the links below. BlackBerry has a security research group made up of some of the world’s best security experts that actively engages with and reviews both BBM and BBM Enterprise code to continuously improve the security of both products.

BBM Enterprise offers encryption that is second to none

BBM Enterprise is the only secure IM client to use a FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic library (note: The list of validated FIPS 140-1 and FIPS 140-2 Cryptographic Modules can be found here).  BBM Enterprise also uses Suite B Cryptography that exceeds the key sizes required for ‘Top Secret’ communications.

(As of February 2015, BlackBerry holds 70+ security certifications and approvals from governments.)

BBM Enterprise is relied on by some of the world’s most security conscious organizations

We first launched BBM Enterprise in June 2014 for BBOS devices and BlackBerry 10 smartphones operating with a COBO or work space only deployment model. Shortly thereafter we extended BBM Enterprise support to BlackBerry 10 smartphones with BlackBerry Balance technology. Over these last 5 months we’ve seen demand for BBM Enterprise coming from some of the most security conscious organizations in the world. BBM Enterprise is being chosen as the preferred secure messaging solution by customers in the regulated finance field, healthcare, defense, national security and secret service organizations.

We know you have lots of questions about BBM Enterprise and the eBBM Suite. Head on over to BBM Enterprise for more information.
